First Floor

Flood Protection

Guided by the construction lessons that shaped UTMB’s Galveston National Laboratory, which sustained no damage during Hurricane Ike, the Jennie Sealy Hospital will be protected against nature’s onslaughts. All of the hospital’s activity begins on the second floor, a full 25 feet above sea level; mechanical systems are located on the eighth floor, protecting vital functions from flood waters. It’s a reminder that, although Galveston will always face the prospect of storms, it need not be daunted by them. In that way, the hospital embodies the same spirit of perseverance and determination that has guided UTMB for 120 years.
